Welcome to the Mac Secrets CD! It’s crammed with over 100 programs and thousands of useful files — not shovelware, mind you, but stuff we’ve carefully selected for its usefulness and relevance to the book.
Installing the Secrets Software
On the CD-ROM, you’ll find the same programs arranged in several different folders — organized by name, chapter, category, and so on. If you’re in a hurry, remember that the Complete Software Collection folder contains everything.
Refer to the Secrets Software Appendix in the back of the book for individual software installation instructions, but the basics are simple: if the software you want is a control panel, extension, desk accessory, sound, or keyboard layout, drag its icon onto your System folder icon, click OK, and restart the computer. Almost everything else may be run directly from the CD, but will probably be faster and more satisfying if you copy it to your hard drive first.
About the Electronic Edition
The electronic edition of Mac Secrets is an Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) file. It therefore maintains all its original fonts, graphics, layout, and so on — and it’s searchable!
But you can’t view it until you install Acrobat Reader, a free program included in the same folder. Just double-click the Acrobat Reader 3.01 icon to start the process. After the installation (which involves restarting the Mac), you’ll be able to read both electronic editions (4th and 5th) of Mac Secrets that are provided on this CD.
Tips on Using Acrobat Reader
Just double-click the Mac SECRETS Electronic Edition file to open it. Use the Find command (in the Tools menu), or click the little Binoculars icon, to search the entire book!
Of course, you’ll probably want to read the book in an enlarged view on the screen — say, 125% (use the pop-up menu in the lower-left). Or press -M to enlarge the electonic page so that it exactly fits your monitor.
But by far the most important trick we can convey is: PRESS THE RETURN KEY REPEATEDLY to scroll through what you’re reading! Don’t bother messing with the scroll bars; Return or Enter automatically adjusts the view to fit the next hunk of text on your screen.
